Joanna Hill

Jo Hill creates still life videos, fusing the traditional with the contemporary. Inspired by the Dutch and Spanish schools of still life painters from the 17th Century, Hill recreates traditional still life paintings of fruits and insects but shoots them on film including an element of movement - a butterfly sweeping through the shot or fruit tumbling into a bowl - injecting movement and life to the traditionally still genre. Creating pieces which are at once vested with memory and the past, Hill injects signifiers of modernity into her images, leaving supermarket labels on her fruit and other obvious signs of modern life. Working also in still images, her work shows an eye for composition and a great attention to detail.
