Oleg Kulik is arguable one of the most influential and notorious performance artist today. Born in Russia in 1961, Kulik has exhibited internationally at, Manifesta I in Rotterdam, Holland (1996), the Venice Biennial (1997), and at the Biennials of Istanbul, Turkey (1997) and Sao Paulo, Brazil (1998). Kulik gained attention and acclaim from the art world for his 'artist-animal' performances where he would assume the role of an animal exhibiting himself naked in cages. As well as performance art Kulik works also in photography. His photography, typically presented as light boxes show a deep engagement with old master painting, investigating chira scuro in his luminous works through images of flesh and water.
